Updated June 2026 with current pricing.
Garage door springs are the most important component on any garage door. They counterbalance the full weight of the door, typically 100 to 500 pounds on a residential door, keeping it light enough to lift and allowing the opener to do its job. When a spring fails, the door fails with it. Choosing the right replacement spring and having it installed correctly is one of the most important decisions you will make for your garage door.
Triple B Garage Doors and Gates provides same-day garage door spring replacement throughout Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, Scottsdale, Queen Creek, Phoenix, and Maricopa. All pricing is flat-rate and confirmed before we start.
Types of Garage Door Springs
Torsion Springs
Torsion springs are the most common spring system on residential and commercial garage doors. They are mounted horizontally above the door opening and work by winding and unwinding along a steel shaft to counterbalance the door’s weight as it opens and closes. The number of springs used depends on the size and weight of the door.
There are several types of torsion spring systems:
- Standard torsion spring (residential): The most common system. One or two springs mounted above the door on a central shaft.
- Standard torsion spring (commercial): Heavier-duty springs built for higher cycle use and heavier doors.
- Steel rolling door torsion spring (commercial): Used on commercial sheet and rolling steel commercial doors. These are contained inside the barrel of the rolling door assembly.
- Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster: A proprietary system where the spring is housed inside a tube, making it difficult to service or upgrade. When a TorqueMaster spring fails, we replace it by converting the door to a standard torsion system, commonly referred to as a torsion conversion.
- EZ Set torsion spring: A DIY-oriented spring system commonly found on doors sold through home improvement stores. We do not install these, but we do replace them with a standard torsion system for a more reliable and serviceable setup.
Extension Springs
Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door and work by stretching as the door opens, storing tension that pulls the door back down when it closes. They are less common than torsion springs on modern doors but are still found on many older residential installations.
Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken
A broken spring usually announces itself. The most common signs include:
- A loud bang from the garage. A torsion spring breaking releases a lot of stored energy at once and often sounds like a firecracker or a gunshot.
- A door that suddenly feels extremely heavy, or will not open at all. With the spring gone, the full weight of the door falls on the opener, which is not built to lift it alone.
- A door that opens a few inches and stops. Most openers sense the extra load and shut down to protect the motor.
- A visible gap in the torsion spring. A broken torsion spring usually shows a two-inch gap where the coil separated.
- A door that comes down crooked or sits unevenly, or cables that have come loose or jumped off the drum.
- Jerky movement, or a door that slams shut faster than normal.
If you notice any of these, do not keep forcing the door. Running the opener against a broken spring can damage the opener and bend the door. Call us and we will get a technician out the same day.
Why Garage Door Springs Break
Every garage door spring has a limited lifespan measured in cycles, where one cycle is the door going up once and coming back down. Standard springs are typically rated for around 10,000 cycles. For a busy household opening the door several times a day, that can mean replacement in just a few years.
The underlying cause is metal fatigue. Each time the spring winds and unwinds, it flexes under hundreds of pounds of load, and over thousands of cycles the steel gradually weakens until it finally fails. It is not a question of if a spring will break, but when.
Arizona’s climate adds to the strain. A garage in the Phoenix Metro area can swing through large temperature changes between a 150-degree summer afternoon and a cool night, and that constant expansion and contraction of the steel accelerates fatigue. Heat and daily use together are why springs in the desert often reach the end of their life sooner than homeowners expect.
This is also why a lifetime 80,000-cycle spring is worth it. Eight times the cycle life of a standard spring means you are far less likely to ever be left with a door that will not open.
Spring Replacement Pricing
All pricing includes the spring replacement, a 31-point safety and maintenance inspection, and the service call. Our lifetime springs are rated for 80,000 cycles on a standard 7-foot door and 40,000 cycles on an 8-foot door. The cycle range reflects door height, not spring quality.
- Standard double spring (16×7 non-insulated door), lifetime warranty: $425
- Heavy double spring (oversized or steelback doors), lifetime warranty: $525
- Quadruple spring system, lifetime warranty: $1,025
- Single spring (single-car door), lifetime warranty: $325
We also offer a 20,000-cycle double spring at $355 with a 3-year warranty for customers who want a mid-range option, though we recommend the lifetime spring for most homeowners as the better long-term value.
For Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster conversions, pricing starts at $725 for a double door and $625 for a single door, both including a new shaft, drums, cables, bearings, brackets, our 80,000-cycle lifetime springs, and the 31-point inspection.
What Every Replacement Includes
Every spring replacement at Triple B includes a 31-point safety and maintenance inspection. We do not just swap the spring and leave. We inspect and service the full system, including the rollers, hinges, cables, drums, bearings, brackets, and track. We lubricate the moving parts, test the safety reversal, and check and adjust the door balance so the new spring is not fighting a worn part somewhere else. You get a door that is safe, balanced, and properly adjusted from top to bottom.
Why Our Lifetime Springs Last Longer
All of our lifetime springs come with a lifetime parts warranty and a 5-year labor warranty. The difference is not marketing, it is the steel. We use a heavier gauge of wire and a higher coil count, which puts more material in every spring. More steel means each cycle puts less stress on the metal, so the spring lasts longer. That is why we can back our springs with a real warranty instead of fine print, and tell you exactly why they outlast the standard springs most companies install.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between torsion and extension springs?
Torsion springs mount above the door and work by winding along a shaft. Extension springs run along the side tracks and stretch as the door opens. Torsion systems are more common on modern doors, generally safer, and easier to service. Extension springs are still in use on many older residential doors and can be replaced or upgraded.
What does 40,000 to 80,000 cycles mean?
Our lifetime springs are rated for 80,000 cycles on a standard 7-foot door and 40,000 cycles on an 8-foot door. The difference comes from the additional turns a taller door puts on the spring with each use. The rating reflects door height, not spring quality. Both are the same spring.
What is an EZ Set torsion spring and should I keep it?
EZ Set springs are a DIY-oriented system commonly found on doors purchased at home improvement stores. We do not install them, but when we encounter a broken one, we recommend replacing it with a standard torsion system, which is more serviceable and compatible with our lifetime springs.
Do you replace Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster springs?
Yes. TorqueMaster springs are enclosed in a tube and cannot be upgraded in place. We convert the door to a standard torsion system, which gives you a much more reliable and serviceable setup going forward. A double door conversion is $725 total, and a single door is $625.
How much does garage door spring replacement cost in Mesa?
A standard double-car door spring replacement with a lifetime warranty is $425, including the service call and 31-point inspection. Heavy double springs are $525, quadruple spring systems are $1,025, and single-car door springs are $325. All pricing is flat-rate with no hidden fees.
Do you offer same-day spring replacement?
Yes, including after-hours and emergency calls. Call or text us at (480) 489-5799 and we will get a technician out the same day.
